THE IDEA

About Guess the Cat

A fluffy tail, a pair of pointed ears, and a face that knows more than it lets on. Can you name the breed? Guess the Cat challenges you to recognize twenty-seven cats from real photographs, randomly selected from a larger photo library. Each round offers four possible answers and a countdown that gradually gets quicker. Study the coat, face, and ears, then trust your instincts. Every correct guess earns a point, and the right breed appears after each answer so you can learn along the way. Finish the quiz to discover your cat-spotting rank, then replay to meet a different set of cats.

How to Play

Enter your name and start the quiz. Look at the cat photograph and choose one of four breed names by tapping, clicking, or pressing the matching number key. You begin with ten seconds per question. Each round removes one second until the timer reaches a five-second minimum. Correct guesses earn one point, while wrong answers and timeouts earn zero. The correct breed appears before the next photo. Complete all twenty-seven rounds to see your score and rank. You can pause during the quiz. Replay selects new photographs and shuffles the question order and answers.

GOOD TO KNOW

FAQ

How many cats are in each quiz?
Each quiz has twenty-seven real cat photographs, with each breed appearing once. Each photo is randomly selected from that breed’s local photo library. Replaying uses a different photo for every breed, and shuffles the question order and the four answer choices.
Why does the timer get faster?
The first question gives you ten seconds. Each following question removes one second until the timer reaches five seconds, then it stays there. The countdown begins only after the photograph loads.
What happens if I miss an answer?
A wrong guess or a timeout earns zero points. The correct breed is revealed before the quiz moves on, and your existing points stay safe. A correct answer earns one point.
Can I play on my phone or with a keyboard?
Yes. Tap or click a breed, or use the 1–4 or A–D keys. You can pause manually. Switching browser tabs or opening the exit confirmation also pauses the countdown.
Where do the cat photographs come from?
The cat photographs come from Wikimedia Commons, with individual author and license details linked below the game. The quiz stores its photographs locally so there is no live image search while you play.
