A keyboard. A whole little universe.

Click the stage and play any of 70 keys: Aโ€“Z, numbers, punctuation, arrows, Enter, Backspace and the numeric keypad. Physical key positions are used, even with a different keyboard layout; the ISO extra key sits next to left Shift on supported keyboards. Small keyboards can reach every sound through Touch keys.

Press different keys together for a chord; release and press again for another hit. Hold Shift for an octave up, Alt / Option for reverse, or both for a high reverse sound. The animation speeds up or reverses with the sound. Try Q + 1 + โ† for a low groove, Shift + O + P for bright bells, and Alt / Option + F for a rising swell. Space changes packs only on the stage. Tab, Escape, function keys, Ctrl / Command, AltGr and Alt + navigation / Enter / Backspace shortcuts keep their normal roles. Some system shortcuts may take priority.

On touchscreens, each finger plays independently. Drag into another region for a new sound. Touch keys switches between Letters, Numbers & symbols, and Arrows & numpad; Touch sound selects the same four layers as the keyboard modifiers. Show pads reveals three rows in a wide stage or three columns in a tall stage. These touch settings do not change keyboard inputs.

Free Play follows you; Jam adds a four-bar loop at 110 BPM. Notes play immediately by default. Rhythm assist in Jam gently aligns notes to a finer beat grid (up to 71ms); switch it off for free timing. Each pack has its own groove. Controls tuck away when you play; use Controls or Escape to bring them back.

All sounds, robot vowels, loops and graphics are original synthesis and drawing. No recorded human vocals. Inspired by the immediate play of Patatap and Mikutap; this is an independent Play Weird instrument.

THE IDEA

About Weird Beats

A tiny instrument for a very big mess. Weird Beats turns your keyboard and fingertips into drums, plucks, bells and friendly robot sounds, each paired with a geometric animation. Explore at your own pace in Free Play, or find a groove over an original backing loop in Jam. Switch sound packs to change both the instruments and the palette. There is no timer, score or finish line. Stay for one note or a whole afternoon.

How to Play

Choose Start playing, click the stage and play letters, numbers, symbols, arrows or the numpad: 70 physical keys, each with a sound and animation. Hold Shift for an octave up, Alt / Option for reverse, or both. On a touchscreen, choose a Touch keys bank and Touch sound layer, then tap or drag with one or more fingers. Show pads reveals the regions. Space changes the pack. Jam adds a backing beat with optional Rhythm assist. Controls tuck away as you play; use Controls or Escape to bring them back.

GOOD TO KNOW

FAQ

Are these recorded voices?
No. Every instrument and the backing loop are original programmatic synthesis. The vowel sounds are labeled Robot / Synth; they are not human vocals or a character voice.
Why is the stage silent?
Start with a click, tap or keypress to enable browser audio. Check Mute and Volume. After switching apps, use Tap to resume. If audio is unavailable you can still play the visuals and retry sound.
What is different about Jam?
Jam adds an original four-bar backing loop at 110 BPM. Pitched sounds use A minor pentatonic. Each sound pack has a different groove. Notes play immediately by default; optional Rhythm assist aligns them to a finer beat grid with a maximum wait of 71ms.
Can I use a phone?
Yes. Touch keys offers three banks covering all 70 sounds, and Touch sound offers original, octave up, reverse and their combination. Each finger plays independently. Show pads reveals the layout. Fullscreen falls back to an immersive page layout when the browser does not support it.
